John of Nepomuk at the backwaters./ Nepomucek nad rozlewiskiem.

The picturesque backwaters divide the villages of Krzeslin and Kownaciska situated 10 kilometres north from Siedlce. The tiny river, which I mentioned while writing previously about Krynica, is called Old River. It origins near Sokołów Podlaski and meanders through 20 kilometres across the fields to mix with the waters of Liviec River near the village of Purzec not far from Siedlce. Usually it appears ordinary and looks like any other stream nearby. However when in early spring the snow melts, Old River turns into a large lake, flooding the meadows and fields in Kownaciska. The exact situation happened in 2010. One of the reasons behind the flooding might also be the work of industrious beavers who settled there a few years ago, steadily changing the countryside to their advantage.

Malownicze rozlewisko rozdziela wioski Krześlin i Kownaciska położone 10 kilometrów na północ od Siedlec . Rzeczka o której wspominałem już pisząc o Krynicy, nazywa się Stara Rzeka.  Bierze ona swój początek nieopodal Sokołowa Podlaskiego  i wije się  przez 20 kilometrów pośród pól, aby zmieszać się z wodami Liwca koło wsi Purzec pod Siedlcami. Zazwyczaj jest niepozorna i niczym nie różni się od innych strumyków z tych okolic. Kiedy jednak wiosną duże ilości śniegu topnieją, Stara Rzeka tworzy prawdziwe jezioro zalewając łąki i pola w Kownaciskach. Tak właśnie było w 2010 roku. Być może przyczyniają się do tego również bobry, które zawędrowały tutaj w ostatnich latach i po swojemu próbują kształtować przyrodę.

On the other side of the bridge over Old River, as you approach from Krzeslin village, there is a most remarkable and scenic  little chapel, built in 19th century with the figurine of Saint John of Nepomuk, commemorating his canonization. John of Nepomuk is a national saint from Bohemia and protector from floods and drowning which explains beautifully why he was situated in this very spot. The charming little chapel is plastered in white, raised on six columns, covered with shingle, definitely one in a kind which I have never before witnessed anywhere else.

Po drugiej stronie mostku na Starej Rzece, czyli po stronie Krześlina, stoi niezwykła, wielce malownicza kapliczka z XIX stulecia z figurą świętego Jana Nepomucena z roku 1728*, a więc z roku poprzedzającego kanonizację czeskiego męczennika. Kapliczka jest tynkowana, malowana na biało, kryta  gontem i  oparta na sześciu kolumnach. Podobnej dotychczas nie widziałem.
