Wooden villas in Zwierzyniec/ Drewniane wille na Zwierzyńcu

Vilnius is not a huge city, but it is just perfect to just live there and enjoy life. On one side of Neris River near the Gediminas Avenue, in the past named after Adam Mickiewicz, there is modern building of Lithuanian parliament. It is enough to cross the bridge to find yourself in a completely different world of Zwierzyniec borough. Until the 18th century this part of town belonged to Radziwiłł family. Later many aristocrats and tsarist officials lived in Zwierzyniec. At last Russian emperor, tsar Alexander I, built one of his summer residences in there. Nevertheless, the name Alexandria, was not accepted by the locals. In 1901 Zwierzyniec became strictly residential neighborhood.

Do XVIII wieku tereny te stanowiły własność Radziwiłłów.

The wooden houses, when they were erected, were hardly considered to be tasteful by many. Time added to the beauty and charm of Zwierzyniec. Wooden neighbourhood in European capital is something pretty unique. In Poland wooden houses are removed or hidden behind newer buildings. People of Vilnius should be praised for their maturity when it comes to preserving and appreciating the past.

Czas upiększył pokryty patyną i tonący w zieleni Zwierzyniec. Drewniana dzielnica w stołecznym europejskim mieście to ewenement. Każdy – no prawie każdy - chce mieszkać w kamienicy.
